Sand Run Nursery & Preserve
the barn at Sand RunSand Run is a 210-acre nursery, preserve and education center in Northern Kentucky. Founded by Mary and Paul Hemmer, Jr., to promote urban reforestation efforts, including industrial development projects of Paul Hemmer Companies, 160 acres of the property have been dedicated to woodland plantings, animal habitats and trails. Tens of thousands of native hardwood seedlings have been planted for later transplantation elsewhere.

Formerly littered with abandoned vehicles and over 40,000 automobile tires, the site was resurrected in the late 1990s. A 12,000 square foot barn and education center was opened in the summer of 2001. Plans call for the addition of a lodge to house weekend visitors.

Sand Run is the source of the Freedom Trees, four million of which will be planted to groves of 400 each and radiating from the Freedom Center along the historic routes of the Underground Railroad. Sand Run also supports community reforestation projects of all types.

To support community efforts, Sand Run is looking for volunteers to help develop and coordinate events and programs. For more information, please email Paul Hemmer Jr..
